On a recent boat dive trip, I overheard a new diver ask her more experienced buddy, “When do you want to do the pre-dive buddy check?” Her buddy replied casually, “I’ll just check myself.” While it might have seemed harmless at the moment, skipping a pre-dive buddy check can have serious consequences, even with a familiar dive partner.

Skipping this crucial pre-dive safety step can have serious consequences, especially on a boat.

Pre-Dive Buddy Checks on a Boat Come with Extra Challenges

Unlike shore dives or pool sessions, a boat can make a thorough buddy check tricky. You may be seated across from your buddy, in different sections of the boat, or rushing to get in the water. Even with a designated dive partner, taking the time to do a proper pre-dive check ensures that both your scuba gear and your buddy’s setup are ready, familiar, and safe before entering the water.

Why a Pre-Dive Buddy Check Catches More Issues

Even experienced divers can miss small but important details: a loose strap, a partially closed tank valve, or a mis-routed hose. Your buddy might spot something you didn’t notice, preventing a problem underwater. Performing a buddy check ensures both divers are fully prepared and reduces the chance of avoidable issues.

Familiarity Builds Confidence with Your Buddy’s Gear

A pre-dive buddy check isn’t just about catching mistakes. It’s also an opportunity to learn your buddy’s gear. You’ll understand how to release their weights, loosen straps, and operate their setup. This familiarity becomes invaluable if something goes wrong underwater. The buddy system isn’t just tradition—it’s a shared safety net.

Boost Your Confidence with a Thorough Pre-Dive Buddy Check

A complete pre-dive buddy check helps divers start their dives relaxed and focused. When you know that both your gear and your buddy’s gear are in order, you can enjoy the dive fully instead of worrying about small oversights.

The Consequences of Skipping a Pre-Dive Buddy Check

Skipping a buddy check may seem minor, but it can create serious risks underwater:

A partially closed tank valve can restrict airflow

Tangled or mis-routed hoses can limit movement or make gauge checks difficult

A disconnected BCD inflator hose can make it hard to float comfortably on the surface

Taking even a few extra minutes ensures these potential problems are caught before they become emergencies.

Pre-Dive Buddy Checks Are for Everyone

Pre-dive buddy checks aren’t a sign of mistrust or inexperience. Every diver, from beginners to instructors, technical divers, and seasoned boat divers, should do one every time. Think of it as a pre-flight checklist for scuba diving, a simple step that protects lives before taking the plunge.

Final Thoughts

Next time you’re about to dive, remember: even if you’ve dived together a hundred times, even if space is tight, and even if it seems easier to check yourself, take the time to buddy up. A proper pre-dive buddy check means double the safety, double the confidence, and double the fun.

You’ve booked your dive, you’re dreaming about turtles and lava tubes, and you can almost feel the ocean spray. Before you jump in, there’s one important step to handle: reviewing your Diver Medical Form. This form is more than just paperwork. It helps you, your buddies, and your dive guides stay safe, and ensures your vacation doesn’t hit an unexpected snag.

Why Reviewing Your Diver Medical Form Matters

This form helps identify potential health risks before you dive. It only takes a few minutes to review, but waiting until the last minute can mean the difference between diving the Cathedrals of Lāna‘i or waving goodbye from the dock.

Divers gather at the Maui harbor, ready for their adventure after completing the Diver Medical Form.

“I’m Healthy!” We Believe You, But Read Your Diver Medical Form Anyway

Most people jump in with “I’m perfectly healthy,” and that’s great. But there are three items in the questionnaire that require a physician’s evaluation, no matter how good you feel:

I struggle to perform moderate exercise (for example, walk 1.6 km/1 mile in 14 minutes or swim 200 meters/yards without resting) OR I’ve been unable to participate in normal physical activity due to health reasons in the past 12 months.

I’ve had surgery within the last 12 months, OR I have ongoing problems from a past surgery.

I’m taking prescription medications (except for birth control or anti-malarial drugs other than mefloquine/Lariam).

If you answer “Yes” to any of these, you will need a physician’s evaluation before diving. By the way, these aren’t the only questions that can trigger the need for a medical release, so read the form carefully and there will be no surprises.

The “Over 45” Question on Your Diver Medical Form

If you are over 45, the form directs you to another section. You only need medical clearance if you also answer “Yes” in that next part. Age alone does not require a physician’s evaluation, so don’t panic.

What Happens After You Answer Yes on Your Diver Medical Form

Once you answer ‘Yes’ to a question that requires medical clearance, it locks in your need for a physician’s evaluation. You will need a physician’s evaluation before you can dive with us again. This evaluation lets your physician confirm it’s safe for you to dive, suggest adaptations, or recommend further testing.

Waiting until the last minute can mean missing your dive. Nobody wants to watch their friends high-five turtles from the surface. Completing your form early avoids this stress and keeps your Maui dives on track.

Why Your Diver Medical Form Matters for Everyone

No form can guarantee safety, but your Diver Medical Form helps identify potential risks for you, your dive team, and your fellow divers:

For you: Your physician can confirm you’re medically fit to dive (that always feels good!), recommend adaptations if needed, or suggest further evaluation for any conditions that may pose a risk.

For your dive team: Providing accurate information ensures guides can respond effectively if an emergency occurs and prevents unnecessary stress or distractions.

For your fellow divers: When guides aren’t managing surprises caused by hidden medical issues, they can focus on keeping everyone safe and enjoying the dive.

The form also provides critical information to emergency responders if a diver cannot speak for themselves.

For more guidance on dive fitness, check out Divers Alert Network’s Fitness to Dive guide.

Pro Tip for Managing Your Diver Medical Form Year-Round

Bring your Diver Medical Form to your annual checkup and ask your physician to review it. Once they confirm you’re medically fit, that clearance is valid for one year, as long as your answers do not change. Keep a copy in your dive bag or on your phone for convenience.

Bottom Line: Be Prepared, Dive Confidently

✅ Review your Diver Medical Form as soon as you book.
✅ Share it with everyone in your group.
✅ If a physician’s evaluation is needed, schedule it before your trip.

Doing this helps you avoid stress, save money, and ensure your vacation actually includes diving.

A dive trip to Maui is pure magic – warm water, colorful reefs, and sea turtles cruising by like they own the place. To make the most of your adventure, here are the things to do before diving in Maui that will ensure a smooth, safe, and unforgettable experience.

1. Get Your Paperwork Out of the Way Early

Nothing says “buzzkill” like spending your first precious minutes in paradise filling out forms. Complete your waivers (and if needed, get your medical release) before your trip. Remember that everyone in your group needs to do this too. This way, if there are any health questions that need a doctor’s sign-off, you’ll have time to take care of them before you arrive. Plus, it frees you up to spend your pre-dive time sipping coffee and watching the sunrise instead of scribbling on a clipboard.

2. Check Your Certification Card (and Logbook)

Whether you’ve logged 500 dives or just 5, your certification card is your ticket to the underwater world. Make sure it’s packed in your wallet or stored digitally (PADI, SSI, SDI, and NAUI all have apps). No matter what format you keep your certification info in, we recommend that you take cell phone shots of the fronts and backs of your physical cards and screen shots of your eCards for quick, easy access. If you haven’t been diving in a while, review your last logbook entries to refresh your memory on weight settings, gear adjustments, and other personal notes – it’ll make getting geared up that much easier.

3. Give Your Gear Some TLC

If you’re bringing your own gear, give it a once-over before packing:

Check mask straps for cracks.

Test regulators and BCD inflators.

Make sure wetsuits and boots still fit (shrinking in the closet is a thing…at least, that’s what we tell ourselves).

If you’re renting, let us know your sizes early so we can set aside the perfect fit for you.

If you need something less common, like prescription masks, DIN adaptors, a cummerbun extender, or size giant fins, contact us ahead of time to make sure they’re available or make arrangements to rent or purchase these items before your trip.

4. Pack Smart for Maui’s Conditions

We’ve got plenty of space for your gear on the boat, and smart packing makes life easier:

Windbreaker or light jacket: The breeze can feel cool between dives – yes, even when it’s hot outside!

Dry bag: Great for keeping clothes, towels, and snacks safe from splashes.

Reef-safe sunscreen: Protect your skin and the reef.

Motion sickness remedy: Just in case—you’ll thank yourself later.

5. Plan Your Post-Dive Fun

Maui’s beauty doesn’t stop at the waterline. After your dives, you might want to:

Grab a bite in Kihei, where you’ll find plenty of casual cafés, shave ice spots, and local favorites.

Take a scenic drive along the coast toward Makena for breathtaking views and photo stops.

Relax on the beach at Kamaole or Keawakapu with a good book and your toes in the sand.

Catch a sunset from one of South Maui’s beach parks, or even from Ocean Vodka. Trust us, it’s the perfect way to end a dive day.

Since you’ll want to avoid flying for at least 18-24 hours after your last dive, it’s the perfect excuse to slow down and enjoy island time. Discover more things to do in Maalaea.

Final Splash:

A little preparation makes your Maui dive trip smoother, safer, and even more fun. We’ve got the boat, the crew, and the underwater wonders – bring your excitement and we’ll take care of the rest.

Thousands of miles journeyed, haunting songs sung, calves nurtured in hidden coves. This winter, join us for Maui whale watching and experience the magic of these gentle giants in Hawaii’s warm waters.

Thousands of miles. Weeks at sea. A tropical paradise awaits off the shores of Maui.

Every winter, the awe-inspiring migration of humpback whales unfolds in the warm waters of Hawaii, and Maui stands at the heart of this spectacular event. These gentle giants embark on an extraordinary journey, travelling from the icy depths of Alaska to the lush, protected waters of Maui, transforming the island into a breeding ground and a sanctuary for their young.

A Solo Trek Across Vast Oceans:

Unlike many marine mammals, humpback whales don’t travel in pods during their migration. They swim independently or in pairs, navigating the vast Pacific Ocean with incredible precision and endurance. Imagine the power and resilience it takes to cover 3,000-5,000 miles in just 4-8 weeks!

More Than Just Relaxation in Paradise:

While Hawaii offers respite from the harsh Alaskan winters, the whales’ journey is far from a vacation. Maui transforms into a vibrant breeding ground, where complex courtship rituals and nurturing of calves take center stage. The shallow, protected bays and coves provide a safe haven for mothers to give birth and raise their young before embarking on the epic journey back north.

2. Winter Retreat: The humpback whales grace Maui’s warm waters from November to May, creating a unique opportunity for visitors to witness their behaviors, including breaching, tail slapping, and fin waving. The BEST months for whale watching on Maui are January through March.

3. Breeding Grounds : Maui’s waters serve as a vital breeding and calving ground for humpback whales, providing a safe haven for newborn calves during the winter months.

4. Distinctive Songs: Male humpback whales are renowned for their complex and haunting songs that can travel for miles underwater. The waters around Maui become a natural amphitheater for these captivating melodies. When the whales are directly under our boat, the sound travels through the hull and you can hear it in the air around you! Most nights, we also drop a hydrophone into the water so we can listen to some whale tunes!

5. Size Matters: These gentle giants can reach lengths of up to 60 feet and weigh as much as 40 tons, making them one of the largest marine mammals on the planet. A baby whale is born weighing as much as a Volkswagen.

6. Conservation Efforts: Humpback whales, including those around Maui, are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act. Responsible whale watching practices play a vital role in their conservation.

7. Eco-Tourism Impact: Maui’s whale watching tours contribute to eco-tourism efforts, promoting awareness and appreciation for these incredible creatures while supporting their conservation.

8. Parental Bonding: Mother humpback whales are dedicated parents, often forming strong bonds with their calves and demonstrating nurturing behaviors, such as teaching them how to breach and tail slap. Calves stay with their mothers for up to a year before weaning.

9. Alaskan Feeding Grounds: During the summer, these whales travel to nutrient-rich Alaskan waters to feed and build up energy reserves for the winter migration and breeding season in Hawaii. In Alaska, they eat up to 1.5 tons of krill a day!

10. Sunset Spectacle: The enchanting spectacle of humpback whales during Maui’s sunset is truly magical. Join us on a sunset whale watch for a chance to witness breathtaking moments and create memories that last a lifetime.

We invite you to join us in celebrating the beauty and significance of Maui’s humpback whales, and consider embarking on an unforgettable sunset expedition to witness these incredible creatures in their natural habitat.
Plunge into the depths off Maui’s shores and uncover the WWII-era Curtiss SB2C-1 Helldiver. Its largely intact wreckage reveals history and vibrant marine life. But it also tells a somber tale of disappearing artifacts – an untouched mystery no more!

Dive into the depths with the Maui Diamond and uncover a piece of history resting on the ocean floor – the wreckage of a Curtiss SB2C-1 Helldiver, an aircraft that met its fate during a training mission on August 31, 1944.

A Dramatic Survival Tale

Piloted by William E. Dill and radioman Kenneth W. Jobe for a practice mission from Pu’unene Airport, the Helldiver now sits in 50 feet of water, missing only its tail fin. Pilot and radioman both successfully ditched the plane and were rescued immediately. As an interesting side note, it is known that Lt. Dill had to ditch another Helldiver in the Gulf of Leyte in the Philippines just months after the one he ditched in Maui; that plane has not yet been rediscovered, but once again, both occupants survived.

A Thriving Underwater Habitat

Referred to as “the beast” or “Son-of-a-Bitch 2nd Class,” this largely intact relic became the focus of attention on Maui in January 2010 when local fishermen noticed their prey disappearing “beneath the wings.” Dive shop owner Brad Varney rediscovered the site, and experts later confirmed it as a Helldiver. It soon became a regular destination for divers seeking a glimpse into the past.

The underwater scene surrounding the Helldiver is a spectacle, with game fish finding shelter and schools of goatfish, nudibranchs, eels, and leaf scorpions calling it home. For anyone diving Maui wrecks, this site offers both history and thriving marine life in a single dive.

A note of caution resonates from the past – in 2011, some parts of the aircraft vanished, leaving a somber reminder of the importance of responsible diving. The 2004 Sunken Military Craft Act protects such historical wrecks from disturbance, emphasizing the need to appreciate without impacting.

As you plan your next dive trip, check the Diamond’s Bookings Calendar page or give us a call to experience and respect this fascinating piece of Maui’s underwater history. Explore, appreciate, and leave the past undisturbed for future generations.

From the unexpected symptoms of skin bends to the crucial role intuition played in my recovery, discover why trusting your gut may be the key to navigating this uncommon but potentially life-altering dive condition. Kate wrote this blog for us several years ago and continues to dive regularly.

I am not a “thrill” diver. AT ALL. I love to dive, but I am the drop in, look around, float around and take some pictures kind of diver. That makes me happy. I don’t push limits, I don’t push tanks, I dive my computers without messing with settings. I am a true recreational diver.

A Normal Dive Day

The shore diving in January had been AWFUL…and for the whole month I only had four dives. Not nearly enough for living on Maui, let alone for someone who works at a dive shop and gets to (has to!) hear about everyone else’s cool critter sightings all day long, so I was thrilled to be able to get on the boat for some very much needed ocean therapy. I had friends and colleagues diving with me and the day was bright yet very windy, so a Molokini trip was out of the question.

I broke out my 5 mil suit, the one I only wear on boat dives because of the weight I have to carry to sink the darn thing. All my other equipment was the same. My main computer is a Suunto D4i and my back up is a Suunto Zoop that is part of my gauge console.

We suited up, dropped in and found beautiful water! I dove with two friends and it was a very normal dive: 68 minutes, max depth 57 feet. All within limits of both of my computers. There was little current, great vis, and yep, a good dive was had by all.

After a 72 minute surface interval (there WERE whales to watch you know), we dropped into our second site.
It was pretty much the same profile: 68 minutes of bottom time with 54 feet at max depth. This dive was also well within the limits of my computers. My profile matched my dive buddy’s. Everything was calm. All was right.

We had nudibranchs, frog fish, mating octopuses, devil scorpionfish – it was a good day!

First Signs Something Was Wrong

I left the boat at 11:30 and headed home to clean gear and have lunch. Then, less than two hours later, my skin began to itch. More of a burn than an itch. At first, I didn’t think much of it…just kind of rubbed my belly…and moved to the couch. I napped for a few minutes, but awoke and the itching was still there.

Then I looked in the mirror.

My mid-section was red. Not crazy beet-red, but red and spreading around to my back.
I had never had anything like this happen to me ever so I ran through a mental check list. New detergent? No. New soap or shampoo? No. Eaten anything strange? Nope!

It suddenly got brighter in the room… as the light-bulb switched on.

I had gone diving.

It hit me hard.

I knew what was happening but did a quick search to confirm my suspicions; I was having symptoms of Decompression Sickness (DCS).

Calling in the Experts: DAN to the Rescue

I chose the “phone a friend” option and my friend told me to immediately call DAN (1 919 684 9111).

DAN (Divers Alert Network) is a service and supplemental insurance where you can seek advice in these situations. Best of all, if you are traveling to exotic and or remote locations, DAN can help you get answers you need regarding symptoms. If you need evacuating, they help with that and help cover the costs.

Go put DAN in your phone right now.

I will wait…OH! You don’t HAVE DAN…I will really wait while you go online and GET DAN! DAN experts confirmed my suspicion: I was experiencing skin bends, and recommended immediate oxygen treatment.

I spoke with Frances who asked me about my symptoms and dive profile and quizzed me a bit. I emailed her a picture of my belly (NOT attractive, but I was not really caring at this point, but the one in this blog is from the skin bends website). They quickly instructed me to go to the hospital and start oxygen as soon as possible.

Once again my “phone a friend” was on the job! Since I am lucky enough to work AT a dive shop, there was plenty of oxygen available. We have oxygen kits for our dive guides and we have a kit for the shop and they are assembled, full, and ready to go at all times. Never did I imagine that I would be on the receiving end of this though!

Before I left the house, I downloaded and took pictures of my dive profiles. Uncertainty about when I would be home or who might need the information ran through my mind. My dive computer stayed on my wrist so it would be available in the ER. A phone charger came along as well, just in case I wasn’t sure how long I’d be away.

By 3:00, I was in the car on the way to the hospital breathing O2 set at 15. During the 30 or so minute drive we chatted.

I was feeling fine…just itchy…and a wee bit scared.

Emergency Room Experience

It was a little funny entering the ER with my own oxygen cylinder. I got a couple looks, but I was very glad to have it!
Thankfully, a quiet day meant I was triaged, processed and in a room within about 70 minutes of leaving my house.

By the time I was in a bed, the rash had all but dissipated. Being put on oxygen early made ALL the difference! The doctor could not see my rash but took my word, looked at my pictures, and we worked from there.

The nurses drew blood, checked my blood pressure (which shot through the roof from nerves!), and gave me IV fluids.

After speaking with the nurses and doctor and giving a dive history, we were left to ourselves for a bit.

I was quite happy when my doctor reappeared to let me know he spoke with the only emergency doctor (Dr. Savaser) that dealt with DCS in ALL of the Hawaiian Islands at the time. Since I wrote this blog several years ago, I’m not sure who the head honcho is these days.

The doctors told me I had supposedly exceeded my limits (which I had not), and the Oahu doc suggested that even my two computers could be wrong. I was a little less than happy with this piece of news from a non-diver.

THEN, I got an email from Dr Savaser! He asked for my pictures and he asked that I call him. He gave me his personal cell number, so I did. Over the phone, he was more relenting on the “you dived too long” theory.

We discussed my symptoms. Rash, itch…but really, nothing else. No joint aches. No confusion. Nothing! He urged me to travel to Oahu to be evaluated by his team and be put in “the chamber” to make sure I was okay.

I declined. I felt more than fine by now. He told me I would have a neurological test by the Maui team and I made sure I had it before being released. I passed it with no problem.

My official diagnosis was “Level 1 DCS” or “Skin Bends“, the lowest level of DCS while still having DCS.

After five hours in the emergency room and six hours total on oxygen, I was released. Even though my Level 1 DCS was mild, it’s a reminder that skin bends can happen to any diver, even when following all safety protocols.

So off we went, healthy and cleared, but really no answers to questions I had.

What had I done wrong?

DID I do anything wrong? What could I have done differently? How will this affect my diving in the future?

Here are a few of the answers.

Nothing. I did nothing wrong. Basically, it can come down to “S**t happens.” Yes, that’s the official word on it.

Differently? Well, these dives were like at least a hundred others I have had, so I’m not sure what I could have done differently, but I do know what I did before I moved forward.

I was checked out before I went back in the water. Dr. Savaser and my primary care physician recommended a four-week diving hiatus. Four weeks (DURING WHALE SEASON!! ARGH). BUT, I did as advised.

Moving Forward: Tips for Safe Diving

I will make sure I am super hydrated before I dive. I tend to not like to drink much the mornings I dive because, well, I “don’t do that and I don’t lie about it” ☺

Right now, I’m kinda over “being the best breather”. I don’t HAVE to breath the tank or be the longest in the water. If I miss something, it is going to have to be okay.

I will use Nitrox on my boat dives. These tend to go deeper, so it’s the safe play.

I will be conservative in my dive profiles.

All of the above I can and will do.

Be aware of your body. Listen to your gut. Don’t dismiss symptoms.

The key takeaway from my story: listen to your body, respect limits, and act fast if skin bends symptoms appear

While I was well within limits, I leave you with this, as was said to me: Computers don’t get DCS…divers get DCS.

Updates and Reflections

UPDATE: My experience with level 1 DCS (skin bends) was 7 years ago! As I reread the blog everything comes back to me like it was yesterday. Here are a couple of updates from me:

YES! I ALWAYS use Nitrox on my boat dives. It’s an added cost I’m willing to pay. YES! I have stayed conservative with my dives profiles and dive times. Since I’ve written this, I have had three friends who have had the same experience. More people have let us know that they read the blog and had similar experiences. Diving has become an incredibly safe sport, but sometimes, as in life, things just happen. Be Safe. Be Careful Listen to your body! Only you know you! -Kate

Dive into the depths of underwater wisdom as we uncover the crucial significance of the divemaster’s briefing. 😉

Aloha Dive Buddies! Are you prepared to dive into the depths of the ocean and explore its wonders? Before you take the plunge, let’s discuss a crucial aspect: the divemaster’s dive briefing.

You might be thinking, “Do we really need another lecture on dive safety? Can’t we just dive in and figure it out?” However, with considerable experience beneath the waves, I can attest to the importance of paying attention to your divemaster’s briefing. It could make all the difference between a smooth, enjoyable dive and encountering unexpected challenges.

Let’s break it down. Your divemaster serves as your guide to the underwater seascape, possessing comprehensive knowledge of the dive site as well as the most effective dive boat procedures for the particular vessel you’re aboard. From drop-off locations to strong currents and hidden marine life, they provide valuable insights that enhance your diving experience. Missing out on this briefing might mean overlooking key aspects of the dive, and nobody wants to return to the surface hearing about amazing sightings while you were preoccupied with remembering how to read your gauge.

Beyond the allure of marine life, the divemaster’s briefing covers essential safety information. This includes hand signals, emergency procedures, and potential hazards. Regardless of your diving expertise, having this information at the forefront of your mind can be crucial when you find yourself 60 feet underwater and facing unexpected challenges.

Moreover, the divemaster assumes a leadership role, similar to that of a captain. Following their guidance is not only a matter of personal safety but also a responsibility to the entire group. Disregarding their instructions could compromise the overall dive experience for everyone involved.

In conclusion, fellow underwater adventurers, approach the divemaster’s briefing with the seriousness it deserves. Pay attention, follow their lead, and prepare yourself to fully immerse in the wonders the ocean has to offer. Impress your dive buddy with your attentiveness, and acknowledge the divemaster as the key player in ensuring a safe and enjoyable dive. Happy exploring!

Step into the enchanting world of sunset whale watches on Maui, where the sun-kissed waves play host to a mesmerizing spectacle. Join us as we guide you through the art of optimizing your whale watch expedition, offering expert tips to enhance the magic of these moments beneath the fading Hawaiian sun.

Embarking on a whale-watching adventure in Maui promises awe-inspiring moments, and we’re here to ensure you make the most of every thrilling encounter. Dive into our expert tips to enhance your experience and capture the essence of these majestic creatures.

Book Your Whale Watch

1. STAY ALERT AND READY

Be patient and be READY! We have a joke we always tell on our boat, “You know how long a whale can stay underwater? Five seconds longer than the human attention span!” It always gets a laugh, but it is SO true. The minute you look away (like down at your cell phone… put that thing away!), you’ll hear the cheers from all around and whip your head up just in time to see the splash that follows the awesome whale breach that just happened. So, stay patient, ready, and limber!

2. HECK YEAH, BRING YOUR CAMERA

Bring along your trusty camera for a chance to immortalize the magic. When aiming for that perfect shot, think ahead of the whale’s movements. Don’t get fixated on the footprint left behind; instead, follow the direction the humpback seems to be heading. Pay attention to the crew’s cues—they’re seasoned experts with a knack for predicting whale behavior. Make your memories last a lifetime with well-timed snapshots of these incredible marine giants.

3. GET SMARTER

Learn a little something before or during your trip. When you know what’s going on out there and why, it makes the experience even more enjoyable. Don’t be afraid to ask questions of the captain or crew. It’s safe to say that these folks who get to see whales daily will have an abundance of knowledge they’re just dying to share with you. This one’s a twofer; you’ll make the crew feel smart, and you get to learn a little something too! Here’s a question for you: do you know where the humpback whales we see in Maui are from? No, not Alaska, silly! They are from Maui (or Hawaii). They are created here and born here. They go to Alaska to eat (it’s cheaper there).

4. DRESS SMART FOR OCEAN ADVENTURES

Stay warm and dry to fully enjoy your oceanic excursion. The wind can pick up unexpectedly, and ocean spray may add a chill to the air. Bring a windbreaker and wear clothes that can handle a bit of moisture. Whether you’re feeling the brisk sea breeze or catching a refreshing whale exhale, being prepared for the elements ensures a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

5. MASTER THE ART OF WHALE SCOUTING

Become a whale scout using the boat as your clock. Call out sightings using directions like “whale at 3:00” and share the excitement of spouts, tail slaps, and breaches with your fellow whale enthusiasts. Embrace the aloha spirit by actively participating in the collective joy of Maui whale watching.

6. CREATE LASTING MEMORIES

Take a moment to let it all sink in and appreciate what you’ve just seen, heard, and felt. Whether you get to witness a mother whale teaching her newborn to breach, a spy hop from a curious escort whale, or the vigorous pushing and shoving that happens among members of a competition pod, getting to see these creatures up close and personal is an amazing experience, and one that most people on earth will never get the opportunity to enjoy. But YOU just did!

7. TUNE IN TO NATURE’S MELODIES

Don’t miss out on the whales’ enchanting serenade. We bring a hydrophone on all our trips, allowing you to listen to the melodic tunes of these marine maestros. From “squeaky door” to “the wookie” and “screaming monkey,” immerse yourself in the symphony of the seas. Listening to the whales sing adds an extra layer of enchantment to your Maui whale watch.

We keep our intimate boat, the Maui Diamond, at a maximum of 20 guests, so it never feels crowded.
