Trust Your Gut… My Experience With Skin Bends

From the unexpected symptoms to the crucial role intuition played in my recovery, discover why trusting your gut may be the key to navigating the complexities of this uncommon but potentially life-altering affliction.  Kate wrote this blog for us several years ago and continues to dive regularly.

I am not a “thrill” diver. AT ALL. I love to dive, but I am the drop in, look around, float around and take some pictures kind of diver. That makes me happy. I don’t push limits, I don’t push tanks, I dive my computers without messing with settings. I am a true recreational diver.

diverkatie

The shore diving in January had been AWFUL…and for the whole month I only had four dives. Not nearly enough for living on Maui, let alone for someone who works at a dive shop and gets to (has to!) hear about everyone else’s cool critter sightings all day long, so I was thrilled to be able to get on the boat for some very much needed ocean therapy. I had friends and colleagues diving with me and the day was bright yet very windy, so a Molokini trip was out of the question.

I broke out my 5 mil suit, the one I only wear on boat dives because of the weight I have to carry to sink the darn thing. All my other equipment was the same. My main computer is a Suunto D4i and my back up is a Suunto Zoop that is part of my gauge console.

We suited up, dropped in and found beautiful water! I dove with two friends and it was a very normal dive: 68 minutes, max depth 57 feet. All within limits of both of my computers. There was little current, great vis, and yep, a good dive was had by all.

After a 72 minute surface interval (there WERE whales to watch you know), we dropped into our second site.
It was pretty much the same profile: 68 minutes of bottom time with 54 feet at max depth. This dive was also well within the limits of my computers. My profile matched my dive buddy’s. Everything was calm. All was right.

We had nudibranchs, frog fish, mating octopuses, devil scorpionfish – it was a good day!

frogfish

I left the boat at 11:30 and headed home to clean gear and have lunch. Then, less than two hours later, my skin began to itch. More of a burn than an itch. At first, I didn’t think much of it…just kind of rubbed my belly…and moved to the couch. I napped for a few minutes, but awoke and the itching was still there.

Then I looked in the mirror.

My mid-section was red. Not crazy beet-red, but red and spreading around to my back.
I had never had anything like this happen to me ever so I ran through a mental check list. New detergent? No. New soap or shampoo? No. Eaten anything strange? No

It suddenly got brighter in the room… as the light-bulb switched on.

I had gone diving.

It hit me hard.

I knew what was happening but did a quick search to confirm my suspicions; I was having symptoms of Decompression Sickness (DCS).

I chose the “phone a friend” option and my friend told me to immediately call DAN (1 919 684 9111).

DAN (Divers Alert Network) is a service and supplemental insurance where you can seek advice in these situations. Best of all, if you are traveling to exotic and or remote locations, DAN can help you get answers you need regarding symptoms. If you need evacuating, they help with that and help cover the costs.

Go put DAN in your phone right now.

I will wait…OH! You don’t HAVE DAN…I will really wait while you go online and GET DAN!

I spoke with Frances who asked me about my symptoms and dive profile and quizzed me a bit. I emailed her a picture of my belly (NOT attractive, but I was not really caring at this point, but the one in this blog is from the skin bends website). It was not long before I was told to go the hospital and also to get on oxygen as soon as I could.

Once again my “phone a friend” was on the job! Since I am lucky enough to work AT a dive shop, there was plenty of oxygen available. We have oxygen kits for our dive guides and we have a kit for the shop and they are assembled, full, and ready to go at all times. Never did I imagine that I would be on the receiving end of this though!

Before I left the house, I downloaded and took pictures of my dive profiles. I was not sure when I would be home or who would want the information. I also wore my dive computer so we had access to it in the ER. I grabbed my phone charger because, yes, I was not sure what my timing was going to be.

By 3:00, I was in the car on the way to the hospital breathing O2 set at 15. During the 30 or so minute drive we chatted.

I was feeling fine…just itchy…and a wee bit scared.

It was a little funny entering the ER with my own oxygen cylinder. I got a couple looks, but I was very glad to have it!
Thankfully, a quiet day meant I was triaged, processed and in a room within about 70 minutes of leaving my house.

By the time I was in a bed, the rash had all but dissipated. Being put on oxygen early made ALL the difference! The doctor could not see my rash but took my word, looked at my pictures, and we worked from there.

Blood was taken and blood pressure checked (THAT was through the roof due to nerves!) and I was given IV fluids.

skinbendsrash

After speaking with the nurses and doctor and giving a dive history, we were left to ourselves for a bit.

I was quite happy when my doctor reappeared to let me know he spoke with the only emergency doctor (Dr. Savaser) that dealt with DCS in ALL of the Hawaiian Islands at the time. Since I wrote this blog several years ago, I'm not sure who the head honcho is these days.

I was told I blew my limits (did not) and the doc on Oahu said computers could be wrong (two of them?). I was a little less than happy with this piece of news from a non-diver.

THEN, I got an email from Dr Savaser! He asked for my pictures and he asked that I call him. He gave me his personal cell number, so I did. Over the phone, he was more relenting on the “you dived too long” theory.

We discussed my symptoms. Rash, itch…but really, nothing else. No joint aches. No confusion. Nothing! He urged me to travel to Oahu to be evaluated by his team and be put in “the chamber” to make sure I was okay.

I declined. I felt more than fine by now. He told me I would have a neurological test by the Maui team and I made sure I had it before being released. I passed it with no problem.

My official diagnosis was “Level 1 DCS” or “Skin Bends“, the lowest level of DCS while still having DCS.

After five hours in the emergency room and six hours total on oxygen, I was released.

So off we went, healthy and cleared, but really no answers to questions I had.

What had I done wrong?

DID I do anything wrong? What could I have done differently? How will this affect my diving in the future?

Here are a few of the answers.

Nothing. I did nothing wrong. Basically, it can come down to “S**t happens.” Yes, that’s the official word on it.

Differently? Well, these dives were like at least a hundred others I have had, so I’m not sure what I could have done differently, but I do know what I did before I moved forward.

I was checked out before I went back in the water. Dr. Savaser and my primary care physician recommended a four-week diving hiatus. Four weeks (DURING WHALE SEASON!! ARGH). BUT, I did as advised.

What I will do going forward?

readytodive

I will make sure I am super hydrated before I dive. I tend to not like to drink much the mornings I dive because, well, I “don’t do that and I don’t lie about it” ☺

Right now, I’m kinda over “being the best breather”. I don’t HAVE to breath the tank or be the longest in the water. If I miss something, it is going to have to be okay.

I will use Nitrox on my boat dives. These tend to go deeper, so it’s the safe play.

I will be conservative in my dive profiles.

All of the above I can and will do.

Be aware of your body. Listen to your gut. Don’t dismiss symptoms.

While I was well within limits, I leave you with this, as was said to me: Computers don’t get DCS…divers get DCS.

Aloha, Kate

UPDATE:  My experience with level 1 DCS (skin bends) was 7 years ago!  As I reread the blog everything comes back to me like it was yesterday.  Here are a couple of updates from me:

YES!  I ALWAYS use Nitrox on my boat dives.  It's an added cost I'm willing to pay.  YES! I have stayed  conservative with my dives profiles and dive times.  Since I've written this, I have had three friends who have had the same experience. More people have let us know that they read the blog and had similar experiences.  Diving has become an incredibly safe sport, but sometimes, as in life, things just happen.  Be Safe.  Be Careful  Listen to your body! Only you know you!  -Kate

Maui Diamond Sea Sports is the only scuba shop you should be diving with when you come to Maui. Getting to dive the cathedrals with them was a bucket list item for me, and I can say that it exceeded my expectations by far. From the professionalism and kindness of the crew, to the incredible wildlife we all got to experience. I can’t wait to come back and dive with you guys again. Thanks for a great trip!

I just got back from an amazing dive trip with the incredible captain and dive masters from Maui Diamond. We did a dive at Molokini and another off the coast of Maui that was just fantastic. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, safety conscious and super helpful. I can't recommend a dive company more than Maui Diamond. Thanks for a great experience!!!!! Also, Beth, who answered the phone when I called to book the trip in advance, was spectacular and helped me make the best decision, which was to go with Maui Diamond.

Excellent dive outfit! I’ve dove with many across the Caribbean and Oahu and Maui Diamond is one of the few that consistently applies diver safety protocols. Detailed brief by the Captain before boarding, Divemasters hit the key points along with a lil extra about the dive sites, and roll call completed before making way from each dive site.

The vessel has a head and sink in its own room. They offer snacks including fresh banana bread and an assortment of canned drinks throughout the trip.

Finally, the staff. I enjoyed the company of Ben, David, Kim, Nick, Michele, Sam, Dave, Don, Beth, Brian, Joe & Greg across four excursions. They worked as a team assisting us throughout the day. Tips are well deserved. A big mahalo to you all!

Maui Diamond Sea Sports is absolutely incredible! From start to finish, the experience was seamless, professional, and so much fun. The crew went above and beyond to make sure everyone felt comfortable and safe while still keeping the energy upbeat and exciting. The boat was well-kept, the gear was in great condition, and the dive sites were breathtaking. We saw amazing marine life up close and learned so much thanks to their knowledgeable team.
If you’re looking for an unforgettable adventure in Maui, this is the company to go with. Highly recommend — we can’t wait to come back!

I had a great experience on this trip! Check-in and onboarding were smooth and simple, and the briefings were both informative and easy to follow. The crew Kim, Dave, David, Greg, and Captain Ben were all excellent, with Dave as our dive master. We visited Carthaginian and Mala, both really enjoyable sites with lots of life to see. Dave was especially helpful in pointing out species I hadn’t noticed before, including my first longnose hawkfish, which was a highlight of the dives.

I attached some photos Dave got on our dive as well. Highly recommend using Maui diamond for your next dive!

First time diving with Maui Diamond-crew was fantastic and went out of their way to make sure all of your needs were met. Beautiful boat, snacks, drinks and a sandwich…I will book with them again when I am back on Maui.

My husband and I recently got recertified (got certified in the 90s) since we are new empty nesters. We had a 3 week holiday in Maui and did a few shore dives to get our mojo back with another dive company in Lahaina. We then booked a boat dive and after a pretty horrific boat dive and traumatic event (best left without details out of respect), we weren't sure if we would be able to find the nerve to get back in the saddle, as the saying goes. We decided to reach out to other dive companies and called Maui Diamond. We spoke to Rachel explaining the circumstances, our concerns, etc., and decided to give it a try again, and are SO glad we did. Every single touchpoint with Maui Diamond was 5 star, top notch: the booking process, the early morning check in with the Captain, the boat, safety checks, the 4 dive pros (shout out to Brian!). The crew made sure we were okay without making it a "thing". They had us laughing and the vibe on the boat was great, ensuring safety, and that all the divers were more than cared for. Buddies were assigned and they even had a plan if one buddy still had extra air and wanted to keep diving. Rachel even followed up, not with an automated email, but a personal one, checking to make sure we were okay. If you are looking to dive anywhere in Maui, do yourself a favor and don't look further... Maui Diamond is the place to book with! We'll be booking with them next August!!

My two-tank private dive with Nick was absolutely incredible! His expertise truly made the day. At the 1st Cathedral, he captured stunning photos of me and the wildlife with the light beams creating a magical effect. The dive at Wash Rock was equally amazing, where he expertly pointed out a shark, a turtle, and rare sea life I would have missed.
Nick’s knowledge and experience are exceptional. He prioritized my safety, especially by navigating the potentially dangerous sea swells with skill. He is a fantastic guide—professional, knowledgeable, and passionate. If you want an unforgettable and safe dive seeing Maui's best, book a tour with Nick

Great company to dive with in Maui. Everything is contained on board. Professional crew sets up tanks and gear for you. Cleans gear on boat on return trip. Thoughtful and hardworking crew. Warm shower of water to clean salt out of your eyes, hair and mouth upon getting back on board after your dive. Plenty of snacks and drinks. Would surely dive with them again. Davis S was knowledgeable about the area, especially the small creatures below. Thanks for a memorable day!

Maui Diamond Sea Sports has made me and my husbands trip memorable with the amazing spots that they have taken us to dive at. We have enjoyed chartering with the entire team even though only Joe was our dive guide on all occasions. They all contributed to caring for us and our gear awhile aboard. We can’t say enough about Maui Diamond other than, I highly recommend them for your diving on Maui. We have dove with them on several occasions and we will continue to use them for their knowledge and love of Hawai’i, diving, and ensuring the safety of all guests that they take out as well as making sure that we have fun in the process of it. Mahalo nui loa Nick, Beth, Dave, Carlos, and Joe from my Ohana to yours!

Maui Diamond Sea Sports is by far the best of all the dive boats I’ve been on. No comparison. Very professional yet fun and relaxed. They do not miss a single step as far as preparation and safety while also making you feel welcome and glad to serve. And serve they do. Full briefings of the dive. Making sure you’re hydrated and not hungry. Very fun. Dave Fuller, Beth and all are the best

Wonderful day scuba diving with Maui Diamond. We planned to go to The Cathedrals but the conditions didn't cooperate but we still went to Lanai and did 2 fantastic dives. The dive guides are very nice, knowledgeable, fun, and took some great photos of us underwater that we didn't have to pay for! Plenty of snacks and drinks on board and was kept very comfortable. Highly recommend.

Great Captain and Crew! Our family of four did 2 days/4 dives. Excellent service and gear. Dive briefs were detailed but not excessive. Lots of soft drinks, water and snacks. I’ve dived twice (so far) with Maui Diamond on their trips to Lanai. The entire crew was awesome. This is an extremely professional operation with captains and guides (like David, Dave, Nick, Beth and so many others) who are passionate about diving and devoted to assuring their guests have every opportunity to share that passion. Plus, the boat we had was perfectly designed. Plenty of space for divers, ample dry storage and really good banana bread and sandwiches. I’ve dived with dozens of companies and rank Maui Diamond among the best.

Absolutely unforgettable 2-tank dive at Molokini Crater! We brought our three boys (18, 16, and 13), all newly certified divers who had just earned their certifications a few weeks before our Maui trip. From the moment we stepped aboard, the crew’s energy, experience and warmth set the tone for the day.

Our dive master, Ernie, was nothing short of exceptional—patient, calm, and incredibly knowledgeable. He guided our boys through every step, making them feel confident and comfortable in the water. The moment we descended, we were surrounded by crystal-clear blue, schools of colorful reef fish, and coral gardens that looked like something out of an aquarium .

Between dives, the captain and crew kept the atmosphere light and fun, sharing tips, stories, and a genuine passion for the ocean. Watching our kids surface grinning ear-to-ear after their very first ocean dives is a memory we’ll treasure forever.

Five stars aren’t enough—this team made our first family dive in Maui truly magical. We hope to be back again soon!

The Maui Diamond Team really makes this a special experience and because of them, this is the second time we have dove with Maui Diamond on our trips to Maui. The first time we dove with Maui Diamond our sons did discovery dives and they were hooked due to the enthusiasm of our captain and dive masters. We returned this year to find the same level of excellence. The knowledge of all the staff and love for what they do shines. The upbeat engaging instructions and introductions from Captain Don to the briefings and care of all of the dive masters. Today we did a two tank dive to Cathedrals of Lani. It is so worth it. The boat is sizable and room to spread out for the crossing. Other amenities on the Maui Diamond are excellent- gear, very comfortable ladders good for rough seas, lots of snacks and drinks (they joked they had a Costco aisle on the boat, they were right) and a clean, and for a marine head, a spacious bathroom. The crew also provided lunch since this was a 6 hour day. The dive masters before, during and after made sure we had everything we needed for a comfortable, but most importantly a safe dive. Our Divemaster Nick was very patient on the first dive as we got acclimated. He found amazing creatures such as the largest species of Eel in the world and guided us through thousands of other species and corals. The Cathedrals dive is especially interesting because it has unique cavern like structures and lots of swim through that refract the light into many colors. The captain and dive masters all helped each other and engaged with all the divers for fun conversation, very grateful to Don, Nick, Beth, Dave and Ernie. Dave also is an avid underwater photographer and shared some great shots with all of us. We are very grateful. We have dove others in Maui and all over the world. They are the best in the business. I would recommend booking multiple days of diving with them if you are planning more than one day of diving while in Maui. I also would recommend them for snorkel and combined Scuba as well as discovery dives (those trying it out before being certified). Truly appreciate the amazing day!

Dove molokini crater today with this crew and they were amazing. Kim was the dive master for myself and my son and she took extra care of me since it was my first dive and I was especially nervous about ascending safely…she took the time to do it with me one on one and let me go without her on the second ascent. Amazing first diving experience with my 18 year old son😎

We went on the Molokini Crater and Cathedrals dives and both were excellent. The visibility in Molokini was incredible with so much to see and the Cathedrals were majestic, we made fantastic memories to treasure. The staff are what really made it, Brian was our guide on day one and Ernie on day two. Both my children are newly qualified divers and we felt in such safe hands with both guides, their experience shone through. Beth and Dave are also worth a special mention as such friendly and helpful staff. The boat was really well equipped with the latest diving gear and plenty of drinks and snacks. Such a wonderful experience on both days, would recommend to anyone.

Booked my scuba dive trip with Maui Diamond Sea Sport, was the best choice I made for my scuba trip to the Molikinu Crate in Maui, The trip was amazing, the boat is big, with drinks and snacks, the have everything planned and organize for you, you just show up, and scuba. The crew go above and beyond for you, so you can enjoy your dive to the max. I recommend this scuba center and give Maui Diamond Sea sport a 1000 stars

Second year in a row of incredible diving with a great company. Friendly and professional staff. Comfortable layout. All of the gear we needed was provided. Great stock of snacks and drinks aboard this boat! Amazing memories were made!

Don was our guide this time and he was great! His briefings were professional and he was a great leader through both dives. Dave went around from group to group underwater and took photos of us in action. This was truly the highlight of our trip. It allowed us to focus on the diving without managing a camera.

We highly recommend Maui Diamond to anyone and everyone!

Spacious boat, great crew, all well organized, Nitrox is available.
Maui Diamond Sea Sports saved my trip to Maui.
Came to dive with different company that cancelled dives and was lucky enough to get spot on Maui Diamond, not once but on two different days.
Crew was very professional, put emphasis on safety, boat was stable, food was tasty, and as they advertise, they do try to spoil clients.
As a cherry on the top, we were lucky to encounter whale-shark, a rare sight that I will remember forever.
Needless to say, for my future trips I now know with whom to book Maui/Lanai diving.

Fantastic Boat with an amazing crew who loves what they’re doing and knows all the popular dives sites as well as some hidden gems. We picked a wildcard day and it was amazing. Captain Ben was super friendly and very thorough with the safety briefing. The dive team was well staffed and very organized. We had divemaster Don who was super chill, laid back, always smiling and very thorough on the dive briefings and provided a very clear picture of each dive site and the different things we might encounter at each dive site. Maui Diamond Sea Sports was awesome to dive and snorkel with. We chose an outfit whom would allow me to dive and my wife to snorkel. They were 100% professional and took us to the best dive spots in Maui, especially when weather turned and got in the way (Pali coast sites). We saw so much with them (Turtles, eels, octopus, so many fish, starfish, etc.) It was an absolutely epic adventure and would not have been so without Captain Ben whom took us up and beyond and David wrote out fish names underwater on his white board to educate. Very cool experience and I so HIGHLY recommend - I'm going to dive with them again!!!

Great dive experience with Michelle, Dave, and Crew from Maui Diamond. Equipment was in great shape and the boat had plenty of space for the group size. Used aluminum tanks to 3k psi, digital dive computer, normal BC and backup regs. We dove on the 13 June 2025 with the 1st dive down to around 80 to 90ft at Molokini Crater and the second dive at Pu'pu Olai cinder cone around 40-50ft. During the dive notable sealife included baby reef sharks, barcuda, eagle ray, lion fish, sponge crab, plenty of native Hawaiian fish and great coral. Thanks again for the great dive experience!

Fantastic dive guide team and boat ride. Friendly, personable, and professional. Great dive spots and safety briefings. I did two excursions (two different days). First was the Molokini Crater two tank dive. Second day was the Lani Cathedrals two tank dive. Molokini Crater visibility was great. Dive guide pointed out a frog fish and octopus, in addition to some small reef sharks swimming by. Cathedrals was a new experience for me, diving through the lava formations and seeing the rare black coral. Very cool! The second dive for both excursions was a drift dive along the shore rock walls, where we saw eels, turtles, and lots of variety of fish.

What a well organized top notch dive company everyone and everything was on point. I’ve been diving hundreds of times and it’s probably one of the nicest boats I’ve been on. It was a bit tight on space but everything was so organized and function extremely well my Dive Master Dave went above and beyond to make sure I had an amazing dive and I also took great pictures… I’m super careful with my air consumption and he took that into consideration and we had an extra long day while also making sure we were safe. We didn’t see a lot of things on our Dive* today, but he sure did a good job capturing what we did see I would definitely dive with this company again! Thanks _divewithdave_ for the photos
